A pet lover in Kozhikode city in India’s southern province of Kerala, Shaleen Mathur, has designed a wheelchair for a handicapped street dog to enable him to walk.

A lawyer by profession, Mathur, who already has many pet dogs and cats at home, saw this street dog struggling to walk and starving on the street.

He made pleas to other people to help the dog, but after no one came forward, he took the dog home and decided to design a trolley for him with the help of available images on the internet.

“I searched images for handicapped dog wheel cart or wheelchair. Once I saw the images, I copied them on a CD and took them to the photo studio and got photos developed. I then went from person to person who ran industries like iron welding,” said Mathur on Sunday.

With strenuous research work and locally available, cost-effective materials, he was able to design a trolley to help the disabled dog walk and give it a new lease of life.

“One industrialist who I knew a bit more well, he finally said he’ll do it (build the trolley). He and his assistant have done an okay type of job. I don’t feel it’s a perfect wheelchair for my dog. Once I am able to earn some more money, I will try to provide this handicapped dog a better wheelchair,” added Mathur.

India has millions of stray dogs on its streets and they regularly become victims of road accidents.
